Academos and the Arconic Foundation : A Partnership to Promote the Potential and Accessibility to Specialized Careers in the STEM and Aeronautics Fields for the Workforce to Come

The Arconic Foundation and Academos are joining forces to promote the potential and accessibility of careers in the aeronautics and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields thanks to funds allocated from the Arconic Foundation to the sum of 40 000 USD over a period of two years.

With its association to Academos, the Arconic Foundation seeks to encourage young people to develop careers in the aeronautics and STEM fields by giving them the resources to develop an interest for them. Since Quebec is in dire need of a new workforce to bear the torch in the specialized STEM fields, it has become imperative to create interest in them at a young age. According to statistics provided in the Stratégie québécoise de la recherche et de l’innovation du Gouvernement du Québec, 80% of young people are turning away from the STEM fields.

Arconic’s employees are invited to become volunteer mentors on the Academos platform. “The new group of mentors at Arconic will guide young people towards changing their perceptions of the many technical and scientific careers available in the aerospace industry,” says Marie Christine Vernier, HR Manager. “Academos is very invested in finding emerging professionals in this sector. Indeed, an Angus Reid Vision Critical study revealed that only 4% of young people believe that scientists are cool,” adds Catherine Légaré, president and founder of Academos. “We are very happy to establish this partnership with Arconic, a company which is very active in the STEM fields.”

Several strategies will be implemented to carry out this project:

  • Recruiting over 50 STEM mentors, 20 of which from Arconic (Laval factories);
  • Developing and presenting a digital advertisement campaign in order to shed light on jobs in the STEM fields at the Laval schools;
  • Reaching out to 15 new professionals in schools and communities in the Laval region to promote Academos to their students;
  • Uploading a page about Arconic on the Academos website.
